Flo, Grizzl-E, ChargePoint, EV Duty... Which Home EV Charger Should You Choose in Quebec?
Flo, Grizzl-E, ChargePoint, EV Duty... Which Home EV Charger Should You Choose in Quebec? according to bornotto
When it comes time to choose a home EV charger, you quickly find yourself staring at a list of names that mean very little: Flo, Grizzl-E, ChargePoint, EV Duty, Wallbox... Everyone seems to have a different opinion, and online forums tend to make things more confusing, not less.
At bornotto, we install dozens of chargers every year. Here is what we actually see in the field, straight to the point.
What Actually Matters When Choosing a Charger
Before comparing brands, it helps to know what criteria make a real difference in everyday use:
- Cable flexibility in cold weather. In Quebec, a cable that stiffens at -20°C is a real problem. Not all models behave the same in winter.
- Enclosure durability. Aluminum versus plastic, indoor versus outdoor rated, these things matter for long-term reliability.
- The mobile app. Some let you schedule charging windows, monitor consumption, and limit amperage. Others are minimal.
- After-sales service. If something breaks, does the company respond? Is the warranty honored without a fight?
- Roulez vert rebate eligibility. The charger must appear on the official list to qualify for up to $600 back from the Quebec government. If you have not read it yet, our article on getting a free (or nearly free) installation through government rebates is a good starting point.
Flo (AddÉnergie): The Quebec Brand
Flo is a company based in Quebec City. That is often the first thing that wins people over, and it is not a bad reason: they understand the winters here, and their public charging network has been running reliably for years.
The residential Flo Maison lineup includes several models, including the Flo Maison X3 and the Flo Maison X6. The higher-end models are built with an aluminum enclosure, which explains why cables stay flexible even in winter. That is a real advantage, not just marketing.
The older Flo Home generation received some criticism around build quality. The newer Flo Maison lineup is generally better received. If you go with a Flo, stick to the current Maison series.
Best for: Those who want a Canadian-made charger with a winter-tough cable and an established support network.
Grizzl-E: The Best Value According to Many
If you follow any Quebec EV groups online, you have probably seen the Grizzl-E name come up repeatedly. There is a good reason for that.
The brand, developed by United Chargers, is built specifically for the Canadian climate. The base models are simple, rugged, and reliable. No complex touchscreen, no elaborate app on the entry-level versions, just a charger that does its job without flinching.
For those who want more connectivity, the Grizzl-E Ultimate 80A delivers higher charging power, built-in Wi-Fi, and a functional mobile app.
The price is generally lower than the competition for comparable specs, which explains its popularity.
Best for: Those who want solid value without sacrificing reliability. Great if you do not need a feature-heavy app.
ChargePoint: One of the World's Largest Charging Networks
ChargePoint is a major American player in the EV charging space. Their residential chargers are among the best-selling in North America, and their mobile app is one of the most complete on the market.
Opinions on build quality are mixed. Some installers note that the internal connectors and finish do not quite match brands like Flo or Grizzl-E. That said, owners who have had ChargePoint units for a few years are often happy: the unit holds up, the app works well, and the customer service team tends to replace defective parts without too much hassle.
The app is worth singling out: charging management, consumption tracking, and time-of-use scheduling are all well done.
Best for: Those who already use the ChargePoint network away from home, or who place a high value on the mobile app experience.
EV Duty: Simple, Reliable, No Drama
EV Duty (EVDuty) is a Canadian brand that plays in a different lane: no built-in Wi-Fi on base models, no advanced app on entry-level units, just a charger that reliably charges your vehicle, indoors or outdoors, year after year.
If you drive a high annual mileage, it is worth thinking about the 11 kW version rather than the 7.2 kW right from the start. Several owners who drive more than 40,000 km per year wish they had gone with the higher-powered model.
The EV Duty 40A models are among the most installed in homes and workplaces across Quebec. Durability feedback is very positive.
Best for: Those who want something proven and dependable, without necessarily needing all the connected features.
Other Brands Worth Knowing
The list does not stop there. A few other models come up regularly in Quebec EV conversations:
- Wallbox Pulsar Plus: compact design, excellent mobile app, responsive customer support according to users.
- JuiceBox (Enel X): built-in Wi-Fi, solid smart charging management.
- Emporia: appealing price point, available at some major retailers.
All of these brands appear on the Roulez vert eligible charger list and are models we install regularly at bornotto.
Which Amperage: 32A, 40A, or 48A?
This is often the second question after brand selection. The answer depends mainly on your electrical panel capacity and your daily driving habits.
For the vast majority of households, a 32A or 40A model is more than enough. If you drive less than 150 km per day, you do not need the most powerful charger on the market.
What matters more than chasing maximum amperage is making sure your electrical installation is properly sized. A licensed electrician can assess your panel and recommend the right amperage without pushing you toward unnecessary spending.
Quebec Winters: A Factor Not to Overlook
In our climate, cable flexibility in cold weather is a real-world criterion that does not always show up in American spec sheets. Quebec EV owners notice it concretely in January and February.
The brands that hold up best for this: Flo (aluminum Maison series), Grizzl-E, and ChargePoint (which received strong marks from Protégez-vous for cable flexibility in cold weather).
Our Recommendation by Profile
There is no single right answer, but here is what we see in practice:
- Tight budget, reliability first: Grizzl-E Classic or EV Duty. Solid, rebate-eligible, no bad surprises.
- You want connectivity and a good app: ChargePoint, Wallbox Pulsar Plus, or JuiceBox.
- You want Quebec-made with a rugged enclosure: Flo Maison X3 or X6.
- You drive a lot and want the fastest possible charge: Grizzl-E Ultimate 80A or Flo Maison X6.
One Important Thing Before You Buy
Regardless of which brand you choose, make sure the installation is done by an electrician with a valid RBQ license. That is a mandatory condition for the $600 Roulez vert rebate, and it is also what ensures your work complies with Quebec's Electrical Code.
At bornotto, our electricians are RBQ-certified and CMEQ members. We handle everything from charger selection to the documentation you need for your rebate application.
